The sensor is used to tell the machine to stop running if the moisture in the soil surpass a preset level. But you don’t need the sensor to use the machine as it can be set manually to run twice per day. You can also manually “delay” the watering for several days during the raining season.

Unfortunately, I can't find a specific reference that answers the question. However, based on the teach-in process, I assume that the sensors are coded and can therefore tolerate several sensors next to each other. If the sensors were not coded, there would be no need to teach them and they would react immediately. But this is only an assumption or interpretation.
