Well separated with jute

Plants on balconies and terraces are usually placed in a flower pot or planter. Drainage holes and a drainage layer in the planting container are essential to avoid the notorious waterlogging for the roots. This is where robust jute comes into play as an optimal separating and filtering fleece. It separates the potting soil from the drainage material (e.g., expanded clay), thus protecting the drainage layer from contamination with soil, and the water drainage holes in the pot remain clear. This allows excess watering and rainwater to drain away effectively. Additionally, repotting the plants is made easier when the individual layers do not mix.

Benefits for the plants

Jute can store water well and ensures a longer availability for the plants during drier phases, even in winter. The jute fabric is a natural product and decomposes over time. The mat can remain in the planting container or be disposed of in a compost bin or organic waste container.

A drainage solution for the planting container

• Cover the water drainage holes of the pot, e.g., with fleece or shards of clay.
• Fill with drainage material (e.g., expanded clay) up to about 1/3.
• Cut the jute separating fleece to size, place it in the pot, and ensure it fits snugly around the edges.
• Fill with soil and insert the plant.
• Place the planting container on feet (e.g., wooden slats) to allow excess water to drain away.
