Can the unit also be operated via the USB cable or does this necessarily have to be done via the connection cable? Thank you very much for a brief clarification.

Yes, it is possible, but the device is not waterproof and the connection is loose.
The original Garmin cable connects very quickly. I have it on my Forza 350 scooter and on my KTM 1290.
