Does the unit have an external mic for hands-free use? If yes, how is it connected and how long is the cable? If no, is there a connection option for an external mic?

Yes, it comes with a microphone, at least it did for me :) It is connected to the back of the radio via a jack (smaller than a headphone plug) and is about 2 metres long, I would have estimated. In any case, it easily reaches from the radio to the ceiling light in a Golf.
