The wood is untreated. Do I have to varnish it first before it can go out or is the idea that the house will warp and weather?

I covered the roof of the insect hotel with roofing felt, so it is protected from water from above. I painted the rest with a natural wood preservative. I replaced the large tubes with small reed and bamboo tubes. Only now is the insect hotel usable and many wild bees have already moved in!

.... We just put it outside - it's allowed to weather. However, we have only had it outside for a year and so far no one has moved in:-((
