In the 1970s, international motorsport was primarily shaped by German manufacturers and their cars, prompting Chevrolet to decide to produce a racing vehicle that would increase American influence in the racing world. The base model was the street version of the Chevrolet Monza, which was re-engineered into a racing model and produced by DeKon Engineering. "Stars and Stripes" decorations were everywhere in celebration of the USA's 200th anniversary in 1976 – why should motorsport be any different?
