The series 212 is considered a direct sub-series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development requirements. Only a more powerful engine with 993 kW was used in the machine. From 1962 to 1965, it was put into service as BR V 100.20, and unlike the V 100.10, which was used on branch lines, it was also intended for mainline and steep gradient service. The locomotives were regarded as very robust and reliable, achieving high, trouble-free mileage. The machines were widespread throughout almost all of Germany.
