The series 212 is considered a direct sub-series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development requirements. Only a more powerful engine with 993 kW was used in the machine. From 1962 to 1965, it was put into service as BR V 100.20, and unlike the V 100.10, which was used on branch lines, it was also intended for mainline and steep gradient service. Due to the increased engine power compared to the V 100.10, a larger cooling system proved to be practical, leading to the extension of the front cab and the frame cover of the locomotives from V 100 2022 from 12,100 mm to 12,300 mm. The larger cooling system can be recognized by the vertical fins compared to the horizontal ones of the other series. The locomotives were known to be very robust and reliable, achieving high, trouble-free operational performances. The machines were widespread throughout almost all of Germany.
