The Flying Scotsman in black

World-famous, fast, strong, and a true legend: The steam locomotive with the resounding name "Flying Scotsman" set a number of world records and made railway history. It pulled the namesake British express train that raced non-stop from Edinburgh to London and back for decades. In 1934, it became the first steam locomotive to reach the magical speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) and later even toured the USA and Australia. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this three-cylinder powerhouse, Märklin released the current museum version in its famous green livery in 2023. Now, as a special edition, a black variant follows that tells a fascinating chapter in the history of the locomotive with its exceptional features. During World War II and for several years thereafter, the famous green color scheme was replaced with a noble black finish, which many British steam locomotives wore during that time. Towards the end of a major overhaul that began in 2006, the black livery was chosen again to protect the locomotive during final assembly and testing. During this time, both young and old had the opportunity to see the Flying Scotsman in this unique condition, first in 2011 and 2012 at the "Railfest," a major railway festival that coincided with the Olympic Games in London and the 800th anniversary of the city of York. Most recently, the locomotive wore this livery during further test drives in January and February 2016. After that, the locomotive received its British Railways green livery and delights railway fans across the country and beyond under the operational number 60103. In the new excellent Märklin model, this special variant of the Flying Scotsman continues to live on in small scale, telling another important chapter in the life of this fascinating European steam giant.
