Product details
Steam locomotive 77.28 of the Austrian Federal Railways. At the beginning of the 1970s, Linz was still a steam locomotive paradise with engines from the series 50, 52, 77, and 93. Aside from those that had been fully or partially refurbished, most of the others were in a rather dilapidated state, meaning they were rusty and dirty. A group of young men – later co-founders of the Austrian Society for Railway History – set out to visually optimize individual steam locomotives. A particularly noteworthy piece in terms of color scheme was 77.66. It received a state railway livery: black boiler, green water boxes and driver's cab, red wheels, and shiny wheel rims and boiler rings. Although this color scheme had not existed for either old Austrian or locomotives from the time of the First Republic, we young people liked it, and it quickly spread among railway enthusiasts and photographers that these shining examples were operating on non-electrified routes in Upper Austria. The later-added 77.28 received a similar colorful appearance to that of 77.66. It retained this look for a long time while already in the possession of the ÖGEG. However, after its last major inspection, it got its original ÖBB color scheme back. Although the two colorful 77s were never historically accurate in terms of railway history, they are nonetheless a piece of Austrian railway history, as they were still in operation in this livery.
