In the mid-1960s, the ÖBB commissioned a new series of diesel locomotives to replace the steam locomotives of series 52, 77, and 93. After several prototypes, the Jenbacher works delivered the series 2043, equipped with a 1,500 horsepower two-stroke diesel engine. It was originally approved for 100 km/h, later increased to 110. With a axle load of 17 tons, it was also suitable for use on branch lines.
