A highly creative idea was developed by Volkswagen and the Deutsche Bundesbahn when they signed a contract in 1959 for the rail transport of engines and transmissions between the various Volkswagen production sites. The solution involved standardized containers that could be transported on short-coupled double units of modified Rm(r)so 31 flat cars. These cars featured only flat structures with wooden floors, on which the support frames for the containers were mounted. Each double unit could carry six containers, which were either filled with 36 engines or 96 transmissions. By 1966, the container transport cars for engine and transmission shipments were operating between Hannover and Wolfsburg, Emden and Ingolstadt, as well as from Kassel-Baunatal to Brussels with the same destinations. Starting in 1970, additional destinations such as Salzgitter, Neckarsulm, Stuttgart, and Osnabrück were added. The model is based on the open freight car double unit Laabs for container transport of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, leased to Volkswagen AG. It features no handbrake, with container support frames and Volkswagen transport containers as the load. The operational state is around 1971.
