The lock is a TSA combination lock. If suspicious or unidentifiable material is found in a piece of luggage during screening, the TSA lock can be opened with a master key by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), allowing the luggage to be searched and then the lock to be re-secured. Therefore, the correct combination or key is not necessary to open the regular luggage lock on bags equipped with TSA locks. If a suitcase does not have a TSA lock and only has a simple combination lock, there is a risk that during a necessary search of the luggage, this lock may be forcibly opened by security authorities without consulting the owner. Meanwhile, authorities in other countries, including Canada, Japan, Israel, Austria, South Korea, and Finland, have also begun opening TSA locks.
