Nokia in a nostalgia frenzy: Three new phones unveiled
A flip phone, a contemporary bar phone and a music phone with integrated true wireless headphones, these are the three new feature phones from Nokia.
In terms of market share, Nokia hardly plays a role in smartphones. By contrast, the brand is the clear market leader in what are now known as feature phones - cell phones that do less than a smartphone but can do a bit more than just make calls - and is likely to consolidate this position with three new devices:
- the Nokia 2660 Flip,
- the Nokia 8210 4G,
- and the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio.
There is no serious competition in sight.
Fold, listen and call
As a foldable cell phone, the Nokia 2660 Flip has two displays. The screen on the inside is 2.8 inches larger than the 1.7 inch one on the outside.
On the back of the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio is a case for true wireless headphones, which you can also pair with any other device via Bluetooth. However, you can only listen to music from the phone via the integrated MP3 player. Streaming services are not an option and even your MP3 collection has to be copied to a microSD card; the internal memory is too small. Its 2.4-inch display is also a bit smaller than that of the 2660 Flip.
The Nokia 8210 4G doesn't have headphones and can't flip, but mainly makes calls. Its display is 2.8 inches. 4G is not important here as a data connection, but for making calls. The other two new launches also use 4G - even if they don't have it in their names. This is important because the old cellular standards have been switched off. For example, 3G in Germany and 2G in Switzerland. This means a phone without 4G can only be used in individual countries.
While the Nokia 2660 Flip and the 8210 4G are both said to cost 79 Euros, the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio is a bit more expensive at 89 Euros - but has headphones included.
