If your system grinds to a halt with large amounts of data, it is often due to the memory. The Lexar NM990 SSD uses PCIe 5.0 and delivers high transfer rates.

An SSD can become a bottleneck. When loading large projects, exporting renderings or starting games, you immediately realise whether your memory can keep up. The Lexar NM990 is built for such moments. It relies on PCIe 5.0 x4 and M.2-2280 form factor. This means it utilises the bandwidth of current high-end systems and, according to the manufacturer, works up to twice as fast as typical PCIe 4.0 models.

The sequential read rates are up to 14,000 MB/s across all models. The 1 TB version achieves write speeds of up to 7,500 MB/s, the 2 TB version 10,000 MB/s and the 4 TB model 11,000 MB/s. Depending on the model, up to two million IOPS are possible for random accesses when reading and up to 1.5 million IOPS when writing. IOPS stands for Input/Output Operations per Second and describes how many individual read or write operations the SSD can handle per second.

SLC dynamic cache and host memory buffer are designed to ensure short loading times and low latencies.

Cooling and efficiency

Fast SSDs generate heat. Lexar combines a graphite thermal sticker with its own Thermal Defender technology. According to the manufacturer, this also improves energy efficiency by ten per cent compared to standard solutions. As a result, performance should remain stable even during longer write and read processes.

Durability and control

The lifespan of SSDs is often specified as «Total Bytes Written» (TBW). This is the total amount of data that can be written to the drive. Lexar specifies this as 750 TBW for the one terabyte, 1500 TBW for the two terabyte and 3000 TBW for the four terabyte SSD. According to the manufacturer, the average operating time between failures is 1.5 million hours. In addition, there is shock resistance up to 1500 G and vibration resistance. The operating temperature can be between 0 and 70 degrees Celsius.

You can use the DiskMaster software to install firmware updates, check the status of the SSD and manage data. Microsoft DirectStorage is supported, which reduces loading times in compatible games and reduces the load on the CPU.
