CAT6 U/UTP slimline datacenter ethernet cables have a smaller diameter (3.8mm vs 5.9mm) compared to regular CAT 6 patch cords, and the bending radius is lower than that of regular patch cords. This design results in improved airflow in the cabinet.
Although ISO/IEC and TIA standards specify the use of patch cords between 22 and 26 AWG, it is possible to use 28 AWG patch cables; however, this will lead to higher attenuation, especially at higher frequencies.
Therefore, it is recommended to use a shorter permanent link length than with regular 24 AWG patch cords to accommodate this higher attenuation.
It is advised to limit the maximum bundle size to 24 cables in Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications to help reduce temperature increases in the cables associated with PoE deployments. Current standards restrict the maximum temperature increase to less than 15 degrees Celsius above ambient for the center cable in a bundle.
