Principles of memory configuration:
A CPU is equipped with 2 memory controllers. Each memory controller has 2 SMIs (Scalable Memory Interfaces) with up to 6 memory slots. Thus, a CPU can address up to 24 RAM memories (2 controllers x 2 SMI x 6 DIMM slots). Registered DIMM and Load Reduced LRDIMM memory modules must not be mixed. When upgrading, you should know which memories are already available or upgrade completely with LRDIMM memory. Memory slots for which no processor is available must not be populated.

Memory configuration for good system performance:
Optimum performance is achieved by using 4 or 8 identical memories per CPU. With 8 DIMMs (1 DIMM per channel), 16 DIMMs (2 DPC), or 24 DIMMs (3 DPC) per CPU, interleaving is optimally supported via the memory controllers and memory channels. This enables maximum performance in independent mode and lockstep mode. 2 DIMMs, 6 DIMMs, or 10 DIMMs per CPU are not recommended. If there is more than one CPU, the memories per CPU should be populated identically (mirrored to the other CPU).
