You can, but you don't have to. It works quite well without. I have also used 3DLac for tall objects with a small footprint, and traces can be easily removed afterwards.

I had the same problem. Simply "pull back" the filament and then cut the filament again at an angle. Then push it back in as far as it will go and press "extrude".
