Initially, the 2025 series NAS models required drives from Synology’s official compatibility list, blocking setup and storage pool creation with unverified third-party drives. However, with DSM 7.3, users can use third-party HDDs and SSDs like Seagate and Western Digital without losing crucial features such as storage pools, health monitoring, and firmware updates.

Note that while third-party drive support is restored for 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives, M.2 storage drives still require official Synology-certified models for storage pool creation. The compatibility list on Synology’s website should be consulted for the most up-to-date verified drives, but the policy now allows broader use of third-party drives including Seagate IronWolf Pro.
