Can the DX517 be set up as a backup unit? So that the main data is stored on a DS1821+ and a 1:1 backup is then created on the DX517? And can the DX517 be controlled separately from the main unit (e.g. DS1821+), e.g. in terms of sleep mode, fans, etc.?

Helpful answer

Moin - Yes - ideally suited for backup, we use it for a cold backup and control the "decoupling" box via external mechanisms ...

Control of the DX517 is not separate, as a backup technically yes, raid ... should be used sensibly. E.g. 10 or shr2 with HOTSPAR should be used. Supplement this with an external USB hard drive as a backup.

Both answers are correct, but I would not recommend them. Better to connect a separate FP as an additional data backup (e.g. ICY box) via USB or use Synology Cloud (not cheap, but very useful in terms of multiple backup solutions at different physical locations).
