This has nothing to do with the bracket itself, but depends on what you mount it on.

Usually you will mount it on a tripod, and the tripod head has to be swivelled to bring the mount into portrait position.

With the ball head on my tripod it works fine.

You can fix the holder in any position. Up, across, diagonally and everything in between :-))
