Do I understand it correctly, can I use this device to transfer from the laptop (e.g. my PP presentation or simply the screen image) to the TV set? Do I need anything else?

That is correct, provided the laptop has the correct HDMI interface. I also bought 3 different adapters, 1x miniDisplayport to HDMI, 1x Displayport to HDMI and 1x Apple Lightning to HDMI, so you can even plug in an iPhone or iPad and the transmission to the TV works.
