The RGB LEDs need a connection/controller to change the colours. At ASUS, this technology is called ASUS Aurora. I could not find this connection in the description of the ASUS Z97 Programmer. In the ASUS gamer models, AURORA is sometimes mentioned on both the mainboards and the graphics cards, or there are even RGB LEDs built into the boards, which then all change to the same colour at the same time. On my ASUS ROG Strix gaming board, there are two headers with round pins, so I needed the adapter cable because the square connectors do not hold on the round pins.
If there is no controller on the mainboard, an additional separate controller may help.
