does anyone know if the Panasonic DP-UB824 can also play videos in wmv format from a USB stick? The Sony X800 can, as far as I can tell.

No, it cannot play wmv videos (from any medium).

According to the operating instructions, it can play the following formats from a USB device: AVCHD, AVCHD 3D, MKV, MP4, MPEG2, JPEG, MPO, AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD (DFF, DSF), FLAC, MP3, WAV, WMA.

I also tested it and copied 1 WMV and 1 MP4 to a USB stick: MP4 works, WMV does not.
