Does the warranty extension make sense at all? Suppose I have 10 Bitcoins on the hardware wallet and the Ledger Nano S gives up the ghost during the warranty period. Is there any possibility of saving the device or the wallet?

You can use the private key to restore to a software or hardware wallet with the standard (BIP32/BIP39/BIP44) at any time.
