Hello, How is the Kingston XS1000 formatted? I intend to use it for regular backups of my Mac Book Pro 16' (2023). Should I reformat it first to ExFat or APFS (possibly extended Mac OS) although I prefer ExFat in case I need to recover something using other PCs. Thanks for your help.

Helpful answer

If a hard drive is used for Time Machine, Time Machine formats it automatically. If you also want to use the hard drive for other purposes, you should create a second partition beforehand and divide the storage space in this way. You can then format the partition for Time Machine as APFS and the rest as exFAT. However, you should not do anything else on the partition/volume that is used for Time Machine so as not to interfere with the required folder structure.
