Here are the procedures from the simplest to the most effective:
Method 1: Via WPS button (Fastest) This method puts the router and the repeater in direct communication without entering a password.
Plug the RE550 into a power outlet near the router (only for setup, you will move it later). Wait until the 'Power' LED is steady.
Press the WPS button on your Swisscom router (this is usually a button on the front or above with a symbol of two arrows forming a circle). The LED on the router will start flashing.
Within two minutes, press the WPS button on the TP-Link RE550.
Wait until the 2.4GHz and 5GHz LEDs on the repeater turn solid. The configuration is done.
Method 2: Via TP-Link Tether App (Recommended) This method allows you to better manage the signal and update the device software.
Download the TP-Link Tether app on your smartphone (App Store or Google Play).
Place the RE550 near the router.
Go into your phone's Wi-Fi settings and connect to the repeater network (usually called TP-Link_Extender).
Open the Tether app, select the RE550 and follow the instructions:
It will ask you to choose your Swisscom Wi-Fi network.
Enter your Wi-Fi Password (the one written under your Swisscom router).
Confirm and wait for the reboot.
Method 3: Via LAN Cable (Access Point Mode) If you have a wall-mounted Ethernet socket in your home which you can reach from your Swisscom router, this is the absolute best method because you will have no loss of speed.
Move the switch (if present) or select Access Point mode in the app.
Connect a LAN cable from the wall socket (or directly from the router) to the port on the RE550.
The device will transmit powerful Wi-Fi without the limitations typical of wireless repeaters.
Advice for positioning in Contone (Gambarogno) Once configured, unplug the RE550 and move it where you need it, but follow this rule:
Don't put it where there is no signal: If you put it in a room where Wi-Fi already doesn't reach, the repeater will repeat 'nothing'.
The half rule: Put it about halfway between the Swisscom router and the area where the signal is poor.
Blue/Red LED: The RE550 has a circular indicator light. If it is Blue, the location is good. If it is Red, it is too far away from the router and the speed will be low.
Important note on Swisscom routers Modern Swisscom routers use a technology called "Smart Wi-Fi" (Band Steering). If you notice devices jumping from one network to another after connection, make sure the RE550 has the same name (SSID) and password as the Swisscom router to create a unique network (almost like a Mesh system).
