I have 2 questions: 1. can the free 7-day cloud storage also be used with the Essential or is there a subscription requirement? 2. does this camera actually work directly via WLAN without an additional router?

Question 1: Yes, you can. You just don't have all the functions like packet, animal and face recognition etc. and only 7 days of recording.
2nd question: Yes, simply connect to your own normal router - works perfectly, as long as the 2.4 Ghz reception is sufficient.
