I have another question, what is the point of leaving the Nas switched on all the time or only when I need it, can it overheat when running for a long time?

The Nas is actually built for continuous operation! - I personally now operate three different Synology Nas and start them up as required. However, if one of them is used as a mail server, for example, you would have to leave the device running all the time.
