I read on pcmag.com about two USB upstreams, which would allow switching mouse and keyboard across two PCs using a monitor. Does this really work?

Yes, it works without any problem. So you can attach a mouse, keyboard and another USB device to the screen and switch between 2 end devices. I have connected my Windows laptop and my MacBook and switch between Displayport and HDMI1. You can define via menu which USB upstream should be assigned to which port. Top device! - Cheers!
