I would like to access the Wireless Plus via the router and back up the data from the laptop there - does this work with software?

It is very inconvenient and the transfer takes an extremely long time via WiFi. It is better to connect the hard drive to the PC/Mac and copy it over "by hand".

I don't think that will work. You would have to connect directly to the hard drive with the laptop.
