I'm a bit confused because it looks like M2, not PCIe. My mainboard still has PCIe 3.0, but an M2 connector with the following description:

"1 x M.2 Socket 3, gray, , with M Key, type 2260/2280/22110 storage devices support ( Supports PCIE SSDs only)".

I probably misunderstood something about PCIe and M2 and M2 is a type of PCIe.

Should work, or, according to the backwards compatibility comment? But presumably with performance compromises?

...yes it works, just with performance compromises because of M.2 PCIe 3.0.
