Is Java required for operation, setup, maintenance, etc.? Java needed? For security reasons, Java should be avoided, so I have not installed JRE on PCs and Macs at all.

I only use my controller on Linux and Java is required there. I assume this will also be the case for the Windows and Mac versions.
Since the beta of version 5.7.x, Java 8 or higher is also required.
