Is the "AF-S" mode and "Single point AF" area supposed to detect the subject and move the little square automatically? Mine doesn't move unless I move it using the Joystick ... is that the correct behavior? I don't have any locking on the AF.

Yes thats the correct behavior, what you are looking for is called „3D tracking“
