Commercially available hard disks are usually formatted for Windows. For Mac or if the hard disk needs to be compatible for both operating systems, simply reformat it. This is easy to do on a Mac using the hard disk utility.

USB hard drives work under any operating system (whether Windows, OS X or Linux).

This hard drive is USB 3.0 capable. If your Mac has USB 3.0 ports, the drive will be fast, if it has USB 2.0 it will be noticeably slower, but it will work.

It works fine for me. I had to format it on MAC first. there are movies on yotube that show you how to do it.

This disc is a mystery to me. It can only be formatted to exfat or Ntsf. It won't work on Mac with disk utility. Even after exfat with win10 it doesn't work. Well, I'll stick with exfat, but otherwise it's fast and quiet.

This disc is not recommended for Mac. I could not format or delete it on the Mac. Problems with access rights, or message that the disc was full. (MacOS 10.13)

Formatting to ExFAT on a Windows 10 PC was successful. After that, deletion on the Mac also worked.

I cannot recommend this hard drive for the Mac. It's not for plug and play. I bought the drive the day before yesterday and can't get it to work under OSX Yosemite. Disk Utility recognises it but can't format it -> error.
