In my opinion, only Wifi is used, but not an internet connection. However, you need the internet to access the data remotely via the app (if needed). I would also go for the XIAOMI outdoor camera, because the Imilab EC2 is quite vulnerable :)

I don't know because mine was connected to the Internet. After a few months it didn't work and I had to come back.
