The WD 510 that I have just bought and which is therefore in my procession is sold as being a 4000 GB drive, i.e. 4 TB, and is recognised by my system ( W11) as being A Wd 510 but once it's been assembled and formatted I get a drive with a size of 465 GB. There seems to be a problem and I'm reluctant to send this drive back for fear of ending up with the same problem.

The problem is with the partitioning, not the SSD.
The 4 TB SSD was probably partitioned as MBR or only partially, which is why only ~465 GB is displayed. Switch to GPT in the disk management and repartition the full capacity.
