When a colour toner is empty, I cannot print in black and white. Even if I remove the toner, an error message appears. Is it possible that I can only print when all toner cartridges are in the printer and have enough colour?

I'm afraid that's exactly how it is. I would also advise against using cheap toner. Then suddenly the whole printer is full of ink powder. I am not an expert, these are just my experiences.
