Question about Synology DX517 Expansion Unit

When connecting such a unit (DX517) to a Synology (1520+), is it recommended to make a volume over the 5 HDD of the unit or can you expand a volume over the NAS and the unit. I think it is dangerous to run a Raid 5 over the cable!

Volumes should not be extended to the extension, mixed operation (e.g. Raid5 with 3 disks above and 3 below) ditto: NoGo.
