Detaching the retaining arms from the ceiling bracket is a very short story, once you get the hang of it 10s.

Bear in mind, however, that the arms are usually mounted on the underside of the projector. This means that if you want to place the beamer somewhere "normally" again, you must also remove the arms. And that takes about 5 minutes (if all the tools are there and you still know how to do it).
