The traditional non-stick effect is achieved by coating pans with PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), a waxy synthetic substance. PTFE has well-documented disadvantages in normal household use. At temperatures above 260 °C, these PTFE coatings break down. It has been proven that the fumes released can be fatal to animals such as birds. In humans, these fumes can irritate the respiratory system and cause nausea and headaches. Therefore, overheating not only damages your pan but also poses a risk to your health.
