The engagement angle refers to the angle in degrees that a hub freewheel rotates in neutral before it can convert the crank's rotational movement into forward motion. The smaller the angle, the faster the leg power reaches the ground. However, it is important to know that there are limits to the minimum possible angle, as the reliability of the freewheel system also partly depends on the angle. What truly makes Ratchet System hubs unique is the fact that all teeth of the two discs engage simultaneously every time. In contrast, only some pawls engage at the same time in pawl hubs. Additionally, the contact area in pawl hubs is quite small, while in the Ratchet System, the entire faces interlock, resulting in much lower point loads. This leads to the legendary reliability of Ratchet System hubs and also the distinctive sound produced when the ratchet discs rotate against each other.
