Soft starters are robust electronic control devices designed for the gentle start of three-phase asynchronous machines. Three motor phases are influenced by phase-cut control through thermistors in such a way that the currents can rise steadily. The motor torque behaves similarly during the startup process. This ensures that the drive can start smoothly without jerking. As a result, it prevents damage to drive components, as the sudden starting torque that occurs with direct switching is avoided. This feature allows for a cost-effective design of the drive components. Once the startup is complete, the thermistors are bypassed using internal relay contacts to minimize losses in the device. The soft stop function is intended to extend the natural deceleration time of the drive, also preventing abrupt stops.
