Hello retowester,
I bought this navi a few weeks ago and am more than satisfied !!! Traffic reports work great, detours have already saved a lot of time :-)
Hands-free function with the iPhone is awesome; caller's name is shown in the display, just like saved in your contacts :-) The acoustics are great! I have been understood very well by all callers so far!
Display, colour, changeover from night to day - all absolutely super and automatic.
Highly recommended!
Free unlimited traffic radio subscription to avoid traffic jams
The nüvi 2589LMT is equipped with Garmin Traffic Radio to help you spend less time stuck in traffic. When using Garmin Traffic, the map is always on the screen. Traffic information is displayed next to the map and messages are also spoken. Garmin Traffic Radio can provide details of the situation, such as how many minutes of delay to expect and whether there are any possible diversions. You can also confirm if you are on the fastest route. With Unlimited Traffic Subscription², the nüvi 2589LMT can receive traffic information for the life of the device, without advertising or subscription costs. Garmin traffic information is sent directly to your nüvi. You do not need a smartphone.

As far as I know, it is practically impossible to use the device outside the car. If the USB cable is disconnected, it switches off after a few seconds. I have tried to switch it on when the USB cable was removed. Suddenly I was on another continent :-) As a pedestrian, I always need my mobile phone. It also has offline maps for abroad, pedestrian mode, many useful apps...
The hands-free system works quite well. However, there is no external microphone and my Nüfi is not very far away when driving. (It's mounted in a Smart) I think with music in the car or strong outside noise, the Nüfi is rather quiet, but the speech is transmitted quite clearly through the microphone. The hands-free system in the Nüfi cannot be compared to a permanently installed one, but it works quite well as a "portable" solution.
