Flat DC motors offer many advantages over conventional permanent magnet DC motors. The flat design requires less space than a conventional motor and provides a long motor life, even when operating at full rated power. They have a high power-to-weight ratio and run very quietly at low speeds. Under full load conditions, they allow for fast acceleration from a rest position, have low inductance, few brush fires, and low radio frequency interference emissions. These motors are available in two magnetic materials: the M-version uses ferrite magnet material, while the N-version uses rare earth magnet material. Compared to the M version, the N version offers up to 2.5 times more power and three times more torque with the same engine size.
