Can the front chain guard / stop on the centreboard tip be removed so that you can also make a cut with the chainsaw? Or is it fixed in place?

It is fixed with 2 rivets. You could drill them out and permanently remove the guard at your peril! Bosch specifically tell you not to do so in the manual.
