The MiniKits range is being expanded with new design variations. The 996 series (model year 1998) marked the beginning of a new era in the 911 series: the previously air-cooled engine was now water-cooled. Compared to its predecessor, the 996 also became bulkier (wider and longer), which shifted its appearance somewhat away from the "classic" sports car look. The introduction of the Boxster, which was somewhat cheaper, drew criticism for Porsche, as it was not a typical 911 and thus increased the risk of confusion.
