Many envision wizards as grand and powerful beings who subtly yet significantly influence the forces of the world toward a greater plan. However, wizards come in all shapes and forms, and some prefer the company of animals over that of kings.

The wizards who were meant to assist the inhabitants of Middle-earth in the fight against Sauron were very diverse in their appearance and nature. While some moved among the powers of the world to advise in war and reshape realms with their wondrous abilities, others were more subtle. Among the Istari, there was one who possessed neither grand halls nor battlements, instead seeking the solitude of the wilderness, where he preferred the company of wild creatures to that of kings.

For those who do not look closely, Radagast the Brown appears to be a gentle recluse, soft in character and temperament, often restless and fidgety, with tattered robes and mismatched footwear, in whose garments a bewildering menagerie of miniature animals and mushrooms resides. This facade is such a complete illusion that even the wizard himself is sometimes deceived, but in truth, great power dwells within him, as it does in each of the five Istari, and he is always on guard against the return of the enemy he was sent to combat from the West centuries ago.
