Steven Spielberg will probably not be directing the fifth "Indiana Jones" film after all. However, a successor has reportedly already been chosen: "Logan" director James Mangold.

Steven Spielberg is out. The fifth "Indiana Jones" film will probably not be directed by him after all. At least that's what the industry magazine Variety reports, citing trustworthy sources close to Spielberg.

The reason for the separation, however, is said to be not creative differences with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, but Spielberg's own desire to pass the Indiana Jones torch to a younger director with his own vision.

A successor has already been named: James Mangold. Negotiations with Disney and Lucasfilm are said to be at an advanced stage and will soon be finalised.

Cinema release in July 2021 could be postponed (again)

This is not the first time that James Mangold has taken on a film franchise. Back in 2013, he directed the second "X-Men" spin-off, "The Wolverine". His greatest successes include the Wolverine sequel "Logan" and last year's "Ford vs. Ferrari" - Mangold was nominated for an Oscar for both films.

Film review: Let it rain Oscars! Because "Ford v Ferrari" is brilliant

Mangold's Johnny Cash film biopic "Walk the Line", starring Joaquin Phoenix, also received four Oscar nominations and one Oscar win. The dark directorial style that Mangold has cultivated since his western remake "3:10 to Yuma" - this film was also nominated for two Oscars - could give "Indiana Jones 5" the necessary breath of fresh air that was missing from "Indiana Jones 4" in 2008.

Spielberg himself will continue to work on "Indiana Jones 5" as a producer. Harrison Ford, who recently spoke about the future of the franchise will also remain on board.

In about two months, filming will begin on «Indiana Jones 5». I'm always excited to return to this character. If we have the opportunity to do another film, it's because people like the films.

The sequel is currently scheduled for release on 8 July 2021. The film was originally due to be released in cinemas in July 2019. However, the release was postponed twice by a year: Steven Spielberg's busy schedule and difficulties with the script were thought to be the causes of the delays.

In fact, the script has already passed through several hands: from David Koepp to Jonathan Kasdan and Dan Fogelman back to Koepp, whose final draft is now to be made into a film. No details are yet known.

I won't give away the plot, of course. But we will see new developments in his life and in his relationship. We will also unravel part of his past.

It is unlikely that Mangold will stick to the April 2020 start date for filming. After all, the rumoured new director will want to bring his own vision to the film.
