David Looking at Things: Olympus xD-Picture Card

In this series, I take a look at things that usually hardly get any attention. Up today: an old memory card.

The xD-Picture Card is a memory card for digital cameras. However, it doesn’t work in any of my countless devices. It only fits into ancient Kodak, Fujifilm or Olympus cameras.

In the noughties, there were several proprietary card formats. The Memory Stick Pro Duo was Sony’s attempt to establish their own format. It wasn’t until the end of the decade that it became obvious that the SD format would become the standard.

Why have I kept the xD card? It’s the same story as with my adapters – I know I’ll never need them, but I keep them anyway. You never know. I might have to take a series of photos with a Fujifilm Finepix A203 and have no xD card at hand. Then what? I’d be lost! Thankfully, I’m prepared.

xD memory cards were made up to a capacity of 2 GB. Mine has 2 GB. So I have the queen of xD cards!

I’ll celebrate this with a cup of coffee from a proprietary capsule system.
